The biggest savings in a Delhi interior come from reducing carpentry quantity, not from downgrading material. Cutting loft storage, shrinking full-height panelling and phasing loose furniture can take 20–30% off a quotation while keeping BWP plywood, branded hardware and proper wiring intact.
Almost every “budget” interior quotation in Delhi is made cheap the wrong way — thinner ply, unbranded hinges, aluminium wiring left in place, 0.8mm edge banding. Those savings show up as swollen kitchen shutters and drooping wardrobe doors in year three. This page is the opposite approach: where you can genuinely take money out of a Delhi interior without buying a worse house.
Where does the money actually sit?
You cannot cut what you have not measured. In a typical Delhi flat interior, this is the split — and it explains why “save on paint” is a rounding error while “one less loft run” is real money.
| Item | Share of budget | How much is realistically cuttable |
|---|---|---|
| Modular kitchen | 20 – 28% | 10 – 15% (layout and loft, not carcass) |
| Wardrobes | 18 – 25% | 15 – 25% (loft, internal fittings, shutter finish) |
| False ceiling + lighting | 10 – 15% | 40 – 60% (peripheral instead of full) |
| Wall panelling / TV unit | 8 – 12% | 30 – 50% (feature wall only) |
| Painting | 8 – 12% | 10% (texture vs plain emulsion) |
| Electrical / plumbing | 6 – 10% | Almost none — do not cut here |
| Loose furniture | 8 – 15% | 100% deferrable to phase two |
Seven cuts that do not hurt the house
- Peripheral ceiling instead of full ceiling. A cove around the room with profile lighting reads as designed; a full box ceiling in a 9ft 6in Delhi flat mostly eats height. Saves ₹120–₹200 per sq ft of ceiling dropped.
- Drop lofts you will not reach. A loft above 7ft in a flat with no stool storage is where suitcases go once a year. Each loft run is roughly 15–20% of that wardrobe’s cost.
- Feature wall, not four walls. Panel the TV wall or the bed headboard wall; leave the other three in a good emulsion. Nobody photographs the wall behind them.
- Open shelves in the kitchen top row. Upper shutters with hinges and soft-close cost roughly 2.5x an open shelf of the same span. Keep shutters on the two cabinets flanking the hob where oil settles.
- Standard sizes over custom. A 600mm base unit costs less per running foot than a 640mm one built to fill a gap. Let the filler panel absorb the odd inch.
- Laminate where you touch, veneer where you look. Veneer the TV wall; laminate the wardrobe internals and the kitchen shutters. The finish difference is invisible at the places you actually cut.
- Phase the loose furniture. Sofa, dining, beds and curtains can follow three months later out of cash flow instead of the fit-out budget.
Five places where cutting costs you more later
- Kitchen carcass material. BWP plywood in the kitchen and any wardrobe next to a bathroom, always. MR ply and MDF swell in Delhi’s monsoon and a swollen carcass cannot be repaired, only replaced.
- Wiring in older flats. If your DDA or CGHS flat still has aluminium wiring, rewire it. Running a modern AC and kitchen load on aluminium is a fire risk, not a preference.
- Waterproofing before flooring. Redoing a bathroom or balcony because a membrane was skipped costs several times what the membrane cost.
- Hardware. Hinges and channels are a small share of the total and the single biggest driver of whether an interior feels cheap in year three. Soft-close as a baseline.
- Edge banding. 2mm PVC edging on every exposed edge. 0.8mm looks identical on day one and chips off within a year on kitchen and study edges.
How to phase a Delhi flat interior
Phasing works when later phases do not require undoing earlier ones. This order does that:
| Phase | What to do | Why this order |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Electrical, plumbing changes, waterproofing | Everything else buries this — it cannot be phased |
| 2 | Kitchen + wardrobes | Carpentry that touches walls and services |
| 3 | Ceiling, lighting, painting | Follows carpentry so joints are covered cleanly |
| 4 | TV unit, panelling, study units | Additive, no rework needed |
| 5 | Loose furniture, curtains, decor | Fully independent, buy over months |
How to read a “cheap” quotation
Two quotations twenty per cent apart usually differ in scope, not in generosity. Before you compare totals, check that both name: the carcass material and grade for each unit, the laminate thickness, the hardware brand, the edge-banding thickness, the number of electrical points, and whether loose furniture, taxes and site debris removal are in or out. A quotation that says “modular kitchen — lumpsum” is not a quotation. Our guide to reading an interior BOQ covers the line items that get quietly left out.
Frequently asked questions
Can I supply my own material to save money?
You can, and some clients do for tiles, sanitaryware and appliances where they have a dealer contact. It rarely saves much on plywood and hardware, because a studio buys at trade rate anyway, and it moves the warranty and the delivery risk to you.
Is a carpenter cheaper than a modular kitchen?
On paper, often 15–25% cheaper. In practice the difference narrows once you account for site wastage, hardware bought retail, and the finish quality of hand-applied laminate versus factory pressing. Site carpentry makes most sense for odd-shaped storage; factory modular makes most sense for kitchens.
Does a smaller budget mean a worse design?
No — it means fewer built elements, better chosen. The Delhi interiors that age worst are usually the over-built ones: panelling on every wall, a full box ceiling in a low flat, storage nobody opens.
What is a realistic minimum for a 2BHK in Delhi?
Around ₹6 lakh for kitchen, two wardrobes, painting and basic lighting with honest materials. Below that, something real is being removed from the scope — ask what.
