Terrace Garden & Pergola Design in Delhi

IntExt Concepts designs and builds terrace gardens, pergolas and outdoor living spaces across South Delhi, Gurugram and Noida. We have been doing this from our Chhatarpur studio since 2012 — mostly on farmhouse terraces, apartment balconies and villa courtyards where the brief is the same: make an unused outdoor slab into a room people actually sit in.

This is design plus execution under one contract. Waterproofing, drainage, structure, decking, planting, lighting and furniture are all handled by our own team, so nobody can point at the next contractor when a terrace leaks after the first monsoon.

Pergola design and installation

A pergola is what turns a terrace from a surface into a shaded, usable space. We build in WPC, treated pine, teak and powder-coated aluminium, and specify by exposure rather than by preference — a west-facing Chhatarpur terrace that takes six hours of afternoon sun needs different material and fixing than a shaded courtyard in Vasant Kunj.

  • WPC pergolas — low maintenance, no termite risk, holds colour in Delhi sun. The default for most residential terraces.
  • Wooden pergolas — teak and treated pine where the client wants real grain. Needs re-oiling every 12 to 18 months in Delhi weather.
  • Aluminium and louvered systems — adjustable louvers for terraces that need both sun and shade through the year.
  • Structure and fixing — we check the slab and parapet load before design, not after. Anchoring into a terrace parapet without checking it is how pergolas come loose in a Delhi storm.

Terrace garden design

A terrace garden in Delhi has to survive 45°C in May and standing water in August. That makes waterproofing and drainage the first two decisions, not the last. We build up in layers — waterproof membrane, drainage cell, filter fabric, then soil — so the slab stays dry and the plants still get root depth.

  • Waterproofing and slope correction before anything else goes down
  • Drainage cells and outlets sized for monsoon volume, not average rainfall
  • Raised planters and grow beds in WPC, stone or fibre, positioned off the slab
  • Artificial and natural grass zones, seating decks and pathway lighting
  • Plant selection for Delhi conditions — species that hold through both extremes

3D visualisation before we build

Outdoor projects are the hardest to imagine from a plan, because the space is empty and the client is standing on bare concrete. We model the terrace in 3D first — pergola position, planter layout, decking direction, evening lighting — so you approve the finished look before a single fixing goes in. Changes on a render cost nothing; changes after the deck is laid cost time and material.

What it costs

Outdoor work is quoted per square foot of treated area, and the range is wide because the civil work underneath varies more than the visible finish.

  • Pergola only — Rs 550 to Rs 1,400 per sq ft depending on material and span
  • Terrace garden with waterproofing and decking — Rs 900 to Rs 1,800 per sq ft
  • Full outdoor room (pergola, decking, planters, lighting, seating) — Rs 1,600 to Rs 2,600 per sq ft

An existing terrace that already drains properly sits at the lower end. One that needs the slope corrected, membrane redone and new outlets cut will sit higher — and skipping that step is the single most expensive mistake on a Delhi terrace.

How the project runs

  • Site visit — we check slab condition, existing waterproofing, drainage outlets, parapet load and sun path.
  • Layout and 3D — zoning first, then a render you sign off.
  • Line-item estimate — material specified by name and grade, no lump sums.
  • Waterproofing and civil — membrane, slope, drainage, structural fixing points.
  • Build — pergola, decking, planters, electrical and lighting.
  • Planting and handover — soil, plants, furniture placement, and a maintenance note for the first season.

Areas we cover

Chhatarpur, Satbari, Sainik Farms, Mehrauli, Saket, Vasant Kunj, Greater Kailash, Hauz Khas, Panchsheel and across South Delhi — plus Gurugram and Noida. Farmhouse terraces and large-plot properties in the Chhatarpur belt are a significant part of our outdoor work.

Common mistakes we get called in to fix

Waterproofing done after the planters are built

The most frequent callout. A contractor lays decking and planters first, then paints a waterproof coat around them. Water finds the joint within one monsoon, and the fix means lifting everything that was just built. Membrane goes down first, continuous, turned up the parapet — there is no shortcut.

Drainage outlets sized for a drizzle

Delhi gets its annual rainfall in a handful of heavy days. A terrace with one small outlet will pond, and standing water on a slab with soil above it is how leaks start. We size and position outlets for peak load and keep them accessible for cleaning.

Pergolas anchored into a weak parapet

A pergola catches wind like a sail. Fixing it into a thin brick parapet without checking the structure is common and dangerous. We anchor into slab or column wherever the parapet will not take it, even when that means changing the layout.

Plants chosen from a catalogue, not for Delhi

Species that thrive in a Bangalore nursery photo will not survive a Delhi May on an exposed terrace. We specify hardy, sun-tolerant planting and group by water need, so one irrigation schedule works for the whole terrace.

Why clients pick us for outdoor work

  • We do the civil work too. Waterproofing, slope and drainage are ours, not a subcontractor we blame later.
  • Chhatarpur studio. Farmhouse and large-plot terraces in this belt are a core part of what we build, not an occasional job.
  • 3D before build. You approve the finished look, not a sketch.
  • Since 2012. Over a decade of Delhi terraces through both summers and monsoons.

Frequently asked questions

Will a terrace garden damage my slab?

Not if it is built correctly. The failure point is always waterproofing and drainage, never the plants. We redo the membrane and confirm the slope before any soil goes down, and keep planters raised off the slab so water can move underneath.

How long does a terrace project take?

A pergola alone is usually 7 to 12 days. A full terrace garden with waterproofing, decking and planting runs 3 to 5 weeks. Monsoon months add time because waterproofing needs dry curing days.

Which pergola material lasts longest in Delhi?

WPC and powder-coated aluminium need the least upkeep. Real wood looks better and ages well, but plan on re-oiling every 12 to 18 months — Delhi sun and dust are hard on untreated timber.

Can you work on an apartment balcony, not just a terrace?

Yes. Balcony work is more constrained — society rules on external changes, weight limits, and no drilling into structural members — but planters, decking, vertical green walls and lighting all work in that footprint.

Do you maintain the garden afterwards?

We hand over with a maintenance schedule, and offer a paid seasonal upkeep visit if you want it. Most clients manage day-to-day watering themselves.
